We bought a box of fresh peaches last week in the grocery store. Good peaches have always been my favorite fruit. While eating one the other day, I wondered if maybe that forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden might have been a peach? In fact, Eve herself was probably a "peach" in Adam's eyes... :-)
Thinking of Eden and that first sin, I have an illustration of how we can become too familiar with sin and find out sooner or later that it can and will turn on us.
There are a few cows on our place that have become somewhat tame. I can feed some of them out of my hand and there is one that I can pet. She likes to have her back scratched. That is, until she has her calf. Yesterday, she calved and this morning she was anything but tame. When I approached on the 4-wheeler, she lowered her head and pawed the dirt, letting me know I needed to keep my distance. You see, she's lost her fear of humans, and if I would try to catch her calf, she wouldn't be afraid to knock me down and walk all over me.
It's the same way with sin sometimes. We try to get near enough to make friends with it and can even touch it sometimes. Then, one day we find out that sin is not something to be comfortable with. We may think we have it under control, but someday we will discover that it is not our friend and in fact it is our deadly enemy.
When we desire to become friends with sin, we are walking down a dangerous path. Allow me to quote James 1:15..."after desire has
conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death."
Don't try to be friends with sin or be involved in sinful behavior. Instead, cultivate a closer relationship with the Lord Jesus. He is our one true Friend in the world.
